After visiting Senne, it only felt right to tick off the other nearby craft beer place that I’d never visited. Loom had a very different feeling to Senne and if you combine those two places with Gremlin, you probably have something for every craft beer drinker in Hatagaya. Here’s what you need to know about Loom:
- Young and fashionable feel to the place. Which is a weird thing to say as when we were there it was quite early and we were the only customers. But you know, you get a feel, don’t you? Curved bench seating, a counter and some standing areas. Quite bright and with good and interesting music playing.
- I didn’t see any taps but there is a well stocked fridge of Japanese craft beer from a variety of breweries. We had one from Hobo and one from Paint Palette and paid about ¥2500 which is about par for the course I think. The brewery selection was interesting and included some things which you don’t see in that many places.
- Alongside being a bar, they also specialize in ‘Spice Food’. As I apparently never tire of saying, because I’m a vegetarian this usually isn’t much good for me, but I’m sure it will work for most people. I can’t remember exactly what the food was, but I remember seeing curry and tacos. I think there was something else too.
- They have WiFi and no cover charge. They have some daytime opening but it’s not every day and sometimes it is for lunch then again in the evening, rather than being open all day. I guess it’s ok if you go there just to drink at lunchtime, but I’m not sure. They also seem to host events like exhibitions and flea markets. There didn’t seem to be much space for such things downstairs but there were some stairs, so maybe that kind of thing happens upstairs. Check their Instagam for details on when events are happening.
This was another fun place to visit. I haven’t been to so many new places recently so it felt good to get back on the horse and try somewhere new. Remember, the more donations I get, the more new places I can go to. I’m sitting here writing this now with basically a free day and a big list of places to go, but also with no money which is a bit of a problem. It’s a little tricky to find Loom. It’s basically down an alley behind the station building. Maybe the easiest way to find it is to go through the little shopping arcade above the station on the north side of Koshukaido, past the curry place, and then turn left when you go out the back. Maybe it’s an oversimplification, and a little strange thing to say given that we weren’t there at a busy time, but I get the feeling that in Hatagaya, if you want a pub with Japanese craft on draft you should go to Gremlin, if you want to savour rare beers in small sizes, go to Senne, and if you’re looking for a more lively and youthful experience, go to Loom.
