Today a quick post on a place which looks quite appealing to me, but which I have failed to use in the way I wanted to on a few occasions. This may sound kind of mysterious but the truth is more mundane. Namely, every time I’ve visited it’s been quite busy, so instead of being able to drink on site, I’ve either only browsed or bought something to take away. Stacks is a book shop with books (obviously), other knickknacks (although I’ve maybe made that sound bad, I didn’t mean to) and a couple of fridges of beer in cans and bottles. Here’s what you need to know:
- As I keep saying, it’s a bookshop, so naturally there is more space taken up by books than drinkers. There’s a small counter for maybe four or five at a push, but on my previous visits the both the book part and the drinking part were busy enough for me to not want to squeeze in next to someone and potentially ruin their day so I gave up on drinking on site.
- Two fridges of bottles and cans made up of a mix between imports and Japanese stuff with quite a wide range of prices. The selection seems to be very well chosen, with stuff for people who just want a reasonably inexpensive can and also for those who are up for splashing a lot more cash on a big sharing bottle of something a lot wilder. The prices on the fridges show how much it is to take the beers away. To drink in there is a corkage fee of ¥200 for stuff under 500ml and ¥400 for anything over, which seems extremely reasonable to me.
- Not sure what else to say in this section. As it’s a shop, it’s obviously open during the day time. That actually might be a good time to go, (on a weekday), if you want to drink on site. I think I couldn’t find WiFi,
I think, given my failures, I should categorise this more as a beer shop than a bar, but as I’m sure anyone who has spent any time drinking in Japan will know, there is definitely a big crossover between these two things. The beer choice seemed great to me and the pricing was good. I’ll keep trying to drink on site and hopefully one day, I’ll succeed in my goal of not getting scared into taking away instead.
