The third and final stop on my brief Tachikawa brewery crawl was a bit of a surprise. After visiting Tachihi and then going to Vertere, I was doing a bit of preparation for my planned next stop at Sakamichi when I visited their website and discovered the existence of a mysterious new(ish) place called Sakamichi North. With a huge backlog of places, I was never going to look a gift horse in the mouth, so decided to go to the new place instead of the original one. The apparent slogan for this place ‘新しい・ 広い・駅に近い’, (New, big, near the station), tells you the basics but it would be a bit slack if I left it at just that so here’s what you need to know:
- It is big. Quite a bit of seating and lots of standing tables. There was something slightly uncanny about the place that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. (Don’t take that the wrong way though, it was more of a deja-vu kind of thing rather than a weird robot with a human face kind of thing). Perhaps the uncanny atmosphere when I was there was initially enhanced by the classical music that they were playing. In Belgian train stations they play classical music at night time as it apparently helps to stop people fighting and misbehaving. I don’t know if the north side of Tachikawa station is like this. I presume not! When the music later changed to J Pop it felt like a lot more familiar experience. But you know, that uncanny thing can be fun too, can’t it?
- When I was there they only had five out of the eight taps going. Naturally they were all their own beers. As with the original taproom, all beers are priced at ¥990. Usually you get 400ml for this, but for the special / strong beers you get 200ml for the same price. They also do growler fills. I was quietly steamed by the time I got here so I’m going to say with not much confidence, (but with just a little bit of confidence), that they didn’t have bottles or cans. I might have just overlooked them though. Will update when I find out.
- No cover charge, lots of daytime opening and, what a surprise, I forgot to check for WiFi. I paid for both or my beers by cashless payment but I think they took cash too. Damn this write up is sloppy. I’m sorry. I’m also sorry for the bad photo which I tried to trim a bit to make it look a bit less shitty, but it didn’t help much. Apologies to you all.
I imagine this would be a great place to go if you were in a medium or large group. It’s significantly closer to the station than the other branch too. Basically here I’m just restating the slogan. I think next time I’ll go to the original place though as, (perhaps this is not always accurate but…), they had more taps and it was a bit more of a comfortable experience. But I still had fun here and would have no qualms about recommending it. Old gits like me like to sit down though.
