About a 1km walk from Kunitachi station will take you to Kunitachi Brewing and Bakushokudo Kasugai. They are next door to each other and owned by the same people. Basically it is a brewery with its own restaurant and tasting room next door. You don’t seem to be able to drink at the actual brewery so it is the restaurant that I’m writing about.
First some history from their homepage. A liquor store was founded in Kunitachi in 1910. For reasons that aren’t clearly stated they started brewing beer in 2020 and opened the restaurant next door in 2021. 110 years to start brewing their own beer. That makes the Watering Hole look a bit hasty!
On to more useful information. This is a big place. There is a counter, lots of tables and outdoor terrace seating. Definitely a pleasant place to spend an afternoon.
I think there were 10 taps on the day I went. Six were their own beers and three were guest beers. Kunitachi Brewing’s beers covered a range of styles; Kolsch, Pale Ale, IPA, Hazy IPA etc. The ones I tried were definitely less hopped up than American imports but they were pleasant to drink on a hot afternoon.
Prices were pretty good. The 310ml regular size ranged from ¥600 to ¥750. Pints ranged from ¥900 to ¥1050. Pretty good.
There is also a beer flight which is four 185ml glasses of your choice for ¥1800.
Being a restaurant, there is lots of food and the lunch sets looked very good. I came late in the afternoon so I just ordered a couple of light dishes but next time I’ll definitely get here at lunch time.
Again, as you’d expect from a restaurant, they are open during the daytime every day except Wednesday.
This is a no smoking establishment, pretty much all craft beer places are nowadays and there is no charge.
I’m not sure if central Tokyo dwellers would go all the way out here if they weren’t in the area but I was on my way home from a hiking trip and this was a very enjoyable detour. Worth popping in if you have the chance.
