Today, a couple of places I visited on a short jaunt out of Tokyo, past Yokohama to Ofuna. It’s been a while since I went to Yorocco’s Kamakura taproom, which is something of a surprise as it’s somewhere I really enjoyed. So when I heard they’d opened somewhere in Ofuna which is a touch closer to home for me, I thought it was somewhere I definitely needed to visit. As this place doesn’t open until 16:00, we popped into another local place before. You can read about No Beer here. But here’s what you need to know about Yorocco’s Ofuna taproom:
- Bit of a different feel to the Kamakura place which was more of a standing bar and which seemed perfect for evening drinking. The Ofuna taproom has some seating, (only for about eight people), and a few standing drinking areas. Perhaps it was because I visited in the daytime, but this place felt a lot brighter, (probably the light coloured walls also contributed to this), and more like what you might expect from a Japanese Craft Beer bar. A quick warning, we arrived at opening time and the place filled up quite quickly, (well the seating did), so if you’re intending to spend some time here, it might be worth arriving as they open up.
- 12 taps, eight of which were their own beers with the others being Japanese and imported guests. The pricing for their own beers was excellent, at ¥1100 for the pint and ¥600 for the half. The guests were significantly more as you might expect. But let’s be honest, if you’re travelling to visit this place, you’re probably doing that for the Yorocco beers. In addition they have a couple of fridges packed with Yorocco cans and bottles and plenty of guests which are available for consumption on site or for takeaway. In addition to the taps, they had a couple of French ciders available by the glass. Place your order and pay at the counter as you go.
- No cover charge and a little bit of daytime opening. I couldn’t find any WiFi. One big difference between this place and the Kamakura branch is that there was a lot more food available here. As you’d expect, I failed to have any and also didn’t really notice what was available. I think it was more substantial than just snacks though, judging from what I could see at the next table.
So now you’ve got two choices when you want to drink Yorocco beers in one of their taprooms. The main benefit of the Ofuna branch for me is that it’s a bit more accessible, being only about a five minute walk from Ofuna station. One drawback is that they don’t have the side pour taps that the Kamakura branch has. But aside from that, this is a great place to have some beers. I don’t get down this way very often, and I probably would go to the Kamakura branch more often than here, but that’s just my preference I guess, as this place offers something very welcome for both locals and visitors from further afield.
