Today a recently opened place in Machida. I don’t think I’ve ever been drinking in Machida in the 12 years I’ve lived in Japan. In the past there didn’t seem to be any particularly exciting bars in that area, but when I recently decided to head down there I thought I’d just have a check and found out that there are a few places now. In this situation I would normally say that I’ll add the others next time I’m in Machida, but the truth is, I liked Kimama so much that it’s unlikely I’ll go anywhere else the next time I go to Machida. Here’s what you need to know.
- Standing bar not too far from the station. Counter for maybe five or six and a few standing tables. Order at the counter and pay as you go. At least that’s how I think it works. That’s what I did anyway.
- Eight taps, seven of which were Japanese craft and the other was an import. Most beers served in two sizes, regular (300ml) and pint (473ml). The import was also served in a small size (200ml). I’m not sure if this is because it was an import and slightly more expensive, or because it was an Habanero double IPA. Prices were either ¥900 or ¥1000 for the regular and ¥1300 or ¥1400 for the pint for the Japanese stuff. The import was ¥100 more than the higher end of these prices. The big selling point for me was the fact that they had some beers and breweries that I really like. I’ve checked their list since and they’ve got some other stuff that I really like too. So as far as I’m concerned the master has great taste.
- No cover charge and they have some daytime opening. Couldn’t find WiFi. Oh and they have some snacks too.
I really liked this place. Good prices, (particular when you consider the fact that the regular is a bit bigger than most places half size), great beers and a nice atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back there soon. I was on quite a tight schedule so I could only stay for a quick pint, but if I’d had more time I could have spent a long time here. Their Instagram account name gives a hint to the fact that they also intend to start brewing and become Machida’s first brewery. Not sure if it would be on the same premises. It didn’t look that big but I don’t know if there is more to it than meets the eye. Highly recommended if you’re in the area!
