When I tell you why I finally got round to visiting the area that this place and the following place were in, you might start to doubt my dedication to providing… hang on how did I describe it again… a ‘by no means comprehensive guide to bars that serve nice beer in the Tokyo area’. What can I say? Time and money are tight, so that definitely explains why I went to watch my football team’s U18 side play. In case you were wondering about the result, we lost and were robbed by a dodgy ref. (Of course I would say that…). But going to a new stadium, (more accurately a training ground), gave me the chance to visit a couple of places on the Sotetsu Line that I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. This post is about the first of the two, a brewpub in a shopping centre which it turned out has a connection I had no idea about to somewhere else on this site. Without any more ado, here’s what you need to know about Yumegaoka Sunday Brewing:
- As I mentioned already, it’s in a shopping centre. I’m not sure if that’s a plus or a minus for you. My seat was facing into the bar so I didn’t get the shopping centre vibes. I don’t think it would have affected my feelings much anyway as it’s a perfectly nice place to have a beer or two. Seating for about 20 and a bit of standing space too. Order at the counter, (actually the bit out the front of the shop), and pay as you go. They’ll give you one of those food court buzzer type things and will either bring you your stuff if they’re not busy or you go and collect your order at the counter when it buzzes.
- 10 taps of their beer, (one was actually a 26K Brewery beer, but given that they are the same company, I think that still counts as being their own stuff), served in two sizes R (296ml) and L (473ml). The prices range from ¥750-¥1050 for the R and ¥1080-¥1450 for the L so there’s some good value to be had if you go for the lower end of that scale. They also have flights of three or four beers (120ml) for ¥1260 for the three beer option and ¥1580 for the four beer option. It gets slightly complicated though as their beers are in four different price brackets and you pay a bit extra for three of those four. It’s more complicated to write an explanation than it is to work it out from the menu, but basically the normal price is for A rank beers and then for any Bs included you pay ¥50 extra and for any Cs or Ds you’ll pay ¥100 or ¥150 extra respectively. I started trying to work out where the value was, got confused and just went for regular sizes instead of a flight as it was simpler. They also had a fridge with some of their bottles available for takeaway, and I saw someone getting a growler fill whilst I was waiting to order.
- They have WiFi, or rather the shopping centre has WiFi. There’s no cover charge and they are open during the daytime as you would expect. Actually, maybe their hours are something you should check as they open and close early (as you’d expect from somewhere in a shopping centre). They have food too and it looked pretty good. We had some chips and they were very nice.
I think it’s been a while since we had a shopping centre bar on here. I think it’s not going to be to everyone’s taste for the reason of where it is, but I thought it was pretty fun. And given that the shopping centre is right next to the train station and the brewery is reasonably close to the entrance and on the ground floor, it’s really easy to time your exit perfectly to catch your train. The main thing I remember from when I went to 26K was that it was very small, so it makes a lot of sense that they might want to also have somewhere a bit bigger. I can’t recall ever seeing their beers in the wild, so I’d say that this is definitely the place to go if you want to try them. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back, but at the same time, I think it’s quite unlikely I will be passing by particularly often. But if you’re in the area, it’s a great option!
