Southbound is the new taproom/bottle shop for the beer importer Cardinal Trading. So that probably gives you a good idea of what to expect from it. It’s situated by the river near Hinodecho station in Yokohama, not far from plenty of other bars and well within walking distance. I popped in briefly during their pre-opening weekend, so didn’t get a complete picture of the place, but here’s an idea of what it’s like.
- Fairly spacious place with some high bench tables and seating for about 25. Open and bright feel to it.
- At the moment, six taps of their imported beers but eventually there will be 12. Beers served in two sizes, full (450ml) and half (250ml). Prices generally range from ¥1200-¥1350 for the larger size, so pretty good value! (I’ve been told though that when they have more taps, there will probably be more variation, with different kinds of beers stretching the parameters I listed above. But I’m sure it will always be the most economical place to drink Cardinal imported beers though). In addition, two fridges with (eventually) around 100 varieties. Beer list is put on their Facebook every day it seems.
- No cover charge and daytime opening. And they have WiFi too! And it’s non smoking, which in Toyko pretty much goes without saying now, but maybe that’s not the case in Yokohama.
So, yeah, perhaps I should have waited till I revisited and they are fully up and running before adding Southbound on here, but it seems like a fun place and I wanted to get it on as soon as possible. When I do go back, I’ll update this and judging on how vague all of this is, it will be a big update. But anyway, in the meantime you should definitely go there, as Cardinal Trading import some really nice beers and Southbound is the best place to drink them. Cheers!
